Barbu Ştirbey, ruler of Walachia between July 1849 - October 1853 and between October 1854 - June 1856, inherited Domeniul Ştirbey from the great magistrate Ştirbey, his adoptive father. Having benefited from a modern education, to a great extent due to his studies in Paris, the ruler dedicated himself to his political concerns, having brought only few changes to the property, which he further let to his son, Prince Alexandru Ştirbey (1837-1895). |
“Buftea was a well managed property, very close to Bucharest, where Prince Ştirbey had designed long paths through the forest that one could freely ride on, for several kilometers. The Prince, as well as three of his daughters were very good riders and we used to spend a wonderful time together. I loved that forest with its flowers that changed with the season, from the small yellow saffron to the violet vetch flowers that stretched their beautiful bunches all over the place in the summer. If I close my eyes, I can still feel the strong smell of the oak shrubs which used to spread their flavor as the evening came and seemed to scatter their very soul in the bracing hours of the sunset”, confesses Queen Mary about the property of Ştirbey familly from Buftea. |
